the chef

Hello Friends!

My name is Angela, I am 29 and I live in the Northern Virginia area with my husband, Nick. I previously attended school as a United States history major and now I am presently working for Loudoun County School District and enjoying cooking as my new hobby (ahem)...obsession.

Julia Child once said, "Find something you're passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it." Well, like many things Julia has said, I couldn't agree more. A hobby is just a hobby but something that you enjoy and become deeply involved with becomes a way of life. For cooking, and as long as you don't follow TOO many recipes of Julia Child's, your way of life (and diet) will become much healthier.

I'm sure you want to know, how did it all begin? Where did this interest come from?
Well, I have always loved being in the kitchen. I don't believe cooking has to be a tiresome chore. Cooking should be fun and interesting! It all started back to when I was a little girl growing up in a great big family where the dining room table was a meeting place, in particular Sunday dinners.

Both of my grandmothers have different styles of cooking and entertaining and they have taught me just about everything I know. My Mom's Mom has a detailed, elegant style of entertaining and she is a very healthy cook, mostly in part to the fact that she lives by the beach and has access to all kinds of delicious fresh seafoods. She encouraged my enthusiasm for learning to cook and bought me my very first Le Creuset dutch oven (kiwi green of course to match my kitchen). This sparked a totally new level of adventure! My Dad's Mom is the true definition of a comfort food aficionado. Some of the best food I've ever eaten has come from her small farmhouse kitchen. Her food resembles a lot of what you would see in the south made with real whole milk, cheese and, lets be honest here...lots of butter!

*I'd like to add a little note of interest here...you can NEVER use too much butter!*

Without my Mom-Mom's recipes, I'm not sure I'd be the aspiring chef that I am. And no, I will not give you her famous mac and cheese recipe. Ever.
As I grew up, I watched and listened to my two wonderful grandmothers who gave me some really great advice about life, love and the joy of cooking.

The story of the apron is quite simple. My Dad's grandmother (again, I have quite a profound respect for the older females in my family) whom was lovingly called "Nan", always wore an apron. As a matter of fact, I'm not sure I can remember a time when she didn't wear her apron while she was at home. A very feminine lady she was, through and through. She also wore heels almost up to the age of 85, so I like to think I get that from her too:o) When I cook, I always wear my apron (which has ruffles and grosgrain ribbon-because even though I am an everyday girl, I believe every girl is a girly girl deep down inside!).

So that's my story.

I hope you enjoy my blog! Please continue to visit, comment and follow me through my journey towards becoming a great cook!
